Sergeant Mehmet Monument

Sergeant Mehmet Monument

It is built on the northern road of Cesaret Hills in the memory of Sergeant Mehmet and 25 privates in 1919 and it takes a space of 600 m2. The monument is built on the point where the attacks of the allied forces has been repelled (including the attack on 7 August 1915). This hill is called Cesaret Hill (Courage Hill) because the Turkish forces defending this hill have shown an extraordinary courage after they run out of ammo.
The area where the monument was located was very important during the war for Turks and English to have total control over Serçe Hill, Kanlısırt and Shrapnel Valley.
After the allied forces have retreated in December 1915, 3 monuments have been erected in the memory of the Turkish victories won in Arıburnu and Anafartalar fronts. First one is established in Kanlısırt where the Anzac forces have been repelled, the second one is established on the northern coast and the third one is established on the Cesaret Hill. Only the latter one of these monuments could survive until today.

The base of the monument is in its original state, but the marble tablet is a new addition. The small flat place where the monument was built is in the North of the Northern Coast and is a commanding ground that overlooks Anafartalar Plain and Sphinx.
