Kirectepe Gendarmerie Monument, Martyrs Cemetery and Tablets

Kireçtepe Gendarmerie Martyrs cemetery which is one of the real martyrs’ cemeteries on the Gallipoli peninsula is located on the top of the Kapanca Hill and was established during the battles. Next to the graveyards there is the Kireçtepe Gendarmerie Monument which was built by putting the empty cannon balls on top of each other. The monument is surrounded by a narrow stone wall. The writings on the tomb stones are in Ottoman. This is one of the three monuments built in memory of the successful Turkish defence after the foreign forces have retreated.

The monument and martyrs cemetery have been repaired by Eceabat Gendarmerie Forces in 1996. Colonel Mustafa Kemal has come here to visit the martyrs’ cemetery during the battles and congratulated the gendarmes on their efforts.

Another monument here is the Kireçtepe monument designed by Architect Ahmet Gülgönen. The stone paved monument which is located 50 m east of the martyr cemetery has been erected in 1985.  The following is inscribed on the monument: The three troops of Gallipoli and Bursa Gendarmerie battalions who fought heroically on 6/8 August 1915 managed to stop two English brigades in Karakol Mountain and Kireçtepe. They defended the northern side of the Anafartalar Group.
