Akbaş Martyrdom and Monument

The Akbas Martyrdom, possibly the first visiting point for visitors coming from Istanbul, is located at the 30th km from Gallipoli to Eceabat. The Akbaş Port, where the martyrdom is located, was one of the main military supply points of the Turkish troops during the battles and was an important center where the war materials coming from Istanbul by sea are unloaded and distributed.

At the Akbaş location, the 19th Military Division had a mobile hospital. Our soldiers, who were seriously injured on the northern front, were kept under observation at Akbaş or Ağadere Hospitals. On the other hand, those soldiers who were in serious condition were transported by ships and taken through the Selimiye Military Barracks, which became a hospital in Istanbul. The martyrs on the ships sinking or died under heavy attack during enemy attacks were buried in the actual martyrdom area on the right side of the road taken to Yalova village.

There are 459 symbolic tombstones in the martyrdom; however, the actual martyrdom is 25 m above the right side of the road to Yalova village; that is, opposite to this monumental cemetery. The area structure is still preserved with its original in 1915, and it is surrounded already. At the rear side of the symbolic cemeteries, there two statues; one is emphasizing the events of the war between the soldiers of both sides reflecting the message of peace and friendship, and another is dedicated to the 1915 Çanakkale Martyrs. There is also a relief describing the activities of the medical units during the Gallipoli Battles in the martyrdom area. The name of our 754 martyrs is mentioned on both sides of that relief. It is written on the relief as ‘Turkish commanders knew how to command, and the Turkish soldiers knew how to die. The secret of winning the war was that simple. Kemal Atatürk.’ The mosque and water-tank with a fountain located at the bottom of the martyrdom also continue to serve visitors. The martyrdom was renewed in 2013 and has gained its current appearance.
