57th Infantry Regiment Martyrs Cemetery

The 57th Infantry Regiment Martyrs Cemetery and monument was designed by architect Nejat Dincel and was built by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Kabatepe-Conkbayırı road, in the south of Kılıçbayır. During the war, the foreign soldiers called this area “chess board”. This newly built martyrs’ cemetery is symbolic. The real martyrs cemetery is located on Bomba Sırtı (Bomber’s ridge), in Çataldere Valley. 

The 57th regiment belonging to the 19th division which is commanded by lieutenant colonel Huseyin Avni is the first Turkish force who fought back and repelled the Anzac soldiers on the Ariburnu Front on the first day of the landing. On the field, It is the first time we’ve witnessed leadership and courage traits of the commander of the 19th division lieutenant colonel Mustafa Kemal.  
57th Infantry Regiment Martyrs Cemetery consists of a fountain, namazgah (open air prayer place), main cemetery and a monument. The main material the martyrs’ cemetery was built with kevser stone, which were used to build caravansaries in the Ottoman and Seljuq era. 

The entrance of the martyrs’ cemetery is an opening on a wall in the East, which is located on the Kabatepe-Conkbayırı road. There’s a bronze statue of Hüseyin Kaçmaz next to the entrance, who was the oldest veteran of Turkey and who died at the age of 108 on 10 September 1994. He was depicted as holding his grandchild’s hand. Right across the entrance, on the wall in the east there’s a relief depicting the counter attack of the 57th infantry regiment. The relief takes a space of 45 m2.  The fountain and namazgah (open air prayer place) are located on the South side. 
The main cemetery of the martyrs’ cemetery has an archway and the walkway starting from this entrance ends at the northern wall. On the northern wall which is the base of the monuments, there are marble plates with the names of the martyrs in the 57th infantry regiment on them.
